Andrew Glasby
Andrew was born in Ashford, Middlesex and was educated at the Duke of York’s Royal Military Boarding School. He enjoyed school life and thrived gaining an obsession for Cricket. He captained the school’s first 11 team for 2 years and had county trials for Kent. He was also selected for the Lord’s Taverners award course at Lords in 1987. Andrew won the Military Cup and was also Drum Major of the school’s 100 strong military band. He left in 1988 having failed his Art A level, unfortunately not focusing too hard on academics.
He started employed life in varying sales positions and in 1992 joined The Cambridge Food Company where he enjoyed 15 years working with his best friend, eventually becoming Sales Director and co-owner of the business.
Andrew has always been greatly enthusiastic about Alan’s work and fascinated by the patination that he did. At the beginning of 2007 Alan talked to Andrew about teaching him how this was done and helping with the business. The apprenticeship was a slow one due to the living distance between them both but the basics were learned and Andrew’s love for the art began to grow.
When Alan passed away at the beginning of 2008 Andrew quickly made the decision to relinquish his partnership with The Cambridge Food Company and continue to produce and patinate Alan’s work.
He has found his feet in a completely different way of life. As you will see on this site he has gained a great passion for sculpture and discovering new patination techniques. Like Alan, Andrew is completely self taught and is highly motivated. A conversation with him about sculpture is a fascinating and exciting one as he exudes the love for his new works. His philosophy is simple ‘When I see something of natural power, beauty and grace it provokes a strong emotion in me. If I can provoke the same emotion from people when they see my work then I have achieved my goal.’
Another lifelong passion has been martial arts, training from a very young age Andrew is now an expert level 5th degree black belt in military self defence and an international instructor/examiner. He runs his own self defence academy in Peterborough.
He has always had a love of music and in the last year he and his friend and ex-business partner Mark have set up a rock band called Zedzded in which Andrew plays lead guitar.
Andrew lives in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. He has been married to Natalie for 13 years and they have two beautiful sons Jamie and Louis. |
